The experience

The tour opens in Cetinje itself, where an easy walk takes you through the old royal capital on its historical path. You'll visit the Monastery of Cetinje, pass the Cipuri church, see the new castle called Biljarda and King Nicola's Castle, now a museum, and walk the main pedestrian street where the city itself reads as a museum of medieval Montenegro. The guide explains the hard but proud life of the people who lived there, and the stories behind each site.

From Cetinje, the route climbs to Lovcen Mountain and its national park, stopping in a village known as the birthplace of the Petrovic dynasty. This is where you have the chance to taste prosciutto ham, dry cheese, rakija brandy and honey wine in one of the oldest bars in Montenegro, and to see the special room where they dry the prosciutto. The mountain itself is abundantly rich in flora and fauna: home to around 1,200 varieties of plants and an important reserve for many of Montenegro's native bird species.

At Lake Peak, the second-highest point on Lovcen, you reach the mausoleum of Archbishop Petar II Petrovic Njegos, a 19th-century poet, leader and church figure. Reaching the top requires climbing 461 stairs, but the climb opens onto a remarkable 360-degree view of Montenegro. The mausoleum's great historical background and the scale of the view from the top are what make the effort worthwhile.
