The experience

The tour departs Podgorica and climbs into the Durmitor mountains, passing through traditional villages, dense pine forests and the alpine town of Žabljak before reaching Black Lake. Known locally as the "Eyes of Montenegro," this glacial lake sits in a cirque of peaks, its clear water reflecting the surrounding ridges. The lake consists of two smaller basins (Veliko and Malo) connected by a narrow strait, and a walking trail circles the shoreline for those who want to linger.

The route then heads toward the Tara River Canyon, Europe's deepest gorge, where the Đurđevića Tara Bridge spans the canyon 150 meters above the emerald water. This is the vantage point most visitors come for: the bridge offers panoramic views down the entire canyon, and a short break on the riverbank lets you watch rafters preparing their descents. For an extra fee, a zip-line crosses the canyon itself. The eight-hour option ends here and returns to Podgorica. The ten-hour version continues into Biogradska Gora National Park, one of Europe's oldest protected forests, to visit Biograd Lake and walk among untouched woodland.

An English-speaking driver handles all transport and narration, and pickup from your Podgorica location is included. The tour suits all fitness levels, though comfort depends on your tolerance for mountain roads and the pace of stops rather than strenuous hiking.
