The experience

The tour leaves Podgorica heading inland to Cetinje, the former capital where monasteries, museums and libraries cluster close enough to walk between them. Seventy percent of Montenegro's cultural and historical treasures sit in this single town: centuries of architecture and artifacts compressed into a day's reach. From there the route climbs through rocky terrain to Njeguši, a village in an authentic valley where you stop to eat. The meal is traditional: dry-cured ham, cheese and home-made bread, the kind of food that marks a place. You also get the chance to dress in traditional Montenegrin costume and photograph yourself in it, standing in a period house.

After lunch, the drive descends along Austria-Hungary's old road: a route so steep and winding the operator warns it will take your breath. The payoff is the belvederes that open along the way, each one framing Boka Bay below. Kotor sits at the bottom, a medieval town ringed by walls that rise straight from the sea, its Old Town packed with cathedrals, churches, museums and bare stone squares, all of it under UNESCO protection. The architecture and the monuments are what the town trades on. You walk through them with time to look.

The final stop is Budva, called the Pearl of the Mediterranean: a resort town where the old quarter sits alongside modern hotels, shops and restaurants, so there is something to see whether you want history or the contemporary coast.
