The experience
The paddle starts in Virpazar, where you'll prep the kayak, pack your belongings in a dry bag and get a brief on technique before pushing off. The first 30 minutes takes you down the small Crmnica river under the Old Bridge (built 1905), then into a high-grass wetland that's a nature reserve for bird species. After another 30 minutes of paddling you reach Skadar Lake itself, one of Montenegro's five national parks.
From there the route heads to island Grmozur, where a small abandoned fort that once served as a 19th-century prison still stands. An hour of further paddling brings you to Lesendro fort, built in the 18th century, and another abandoned fort on a nearby island. You'll have time to look around both before continuing to Pelinovo Beach, where you stop for a swim, a drink and a rest. The return follows the same route back to Virpazar.
A live English-speaking guide leads the whole paddle and handles the logistics. You bring moderate fitness and a willingness to sit in a kayak for stretches of an hour or more. The tour wraps with a short break in a local restaurant for drinks before you head out.
