The experience
Virpazar sits at the mouth of a narrow canal lined with willows and reeds, and that's where the boat leaves from. The wooden čun (a traditional flat-bottomed vessel built for these shallow, reed-choked waters) handles the tight passages that larger boats can't navigate. You'll pass under a bridge and emerge into open water where Lesendro fortress rises from the shore, its stone walls dating back to the reign of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. The fortress once guarded against invasion. Today it draws birdwatchers to its ecosystem of cormorants, herons, gulls, coots and kingfishers. Pelicans (the rare birds on the national park's official logo) drift through if luck holds.
The route heads toward the Morača River, an International Birding Area, then curves toward three wild islands where white and yellow water lilies carpet the shallows between dark green leaves. You'll swim in the lake's deep blue waters with mountain ranges and typical Montenegrin countryside as the backdrop. On the return to Virpazar, you drink local wine and juice while the boat moves slowly through the same channels you came in on, the day's quiet settling around you.
The guide speaks English and carries maps of Lake Skadar. Life vests and safety equipment come with the booking, and the national park entry fee is included. The tour runs two hours and works for all fitness levels. Infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and the operator can assist people with impaired mobility boarding the boat. You'll need to arrange your own transport to and from Virpazar.
