Three stops in one day: Mayan ruins on the Caribbean shore, then turtles and a jungle cenote

A guided day tour from Cancun combines Tulum Ruins, a swim with sea turtles at Akumal Beach, and a cenote in the Mayan jungle, with hotel pickup, bilingual guide, and buffet lunch included. The tour runs 9 to 10 hours and departs from your hotel; Akumal access is available for ages 5 and up. A certified guide leads the Tulum visit and explains the site's history and architecture; you choose whether to add the Mayan ruins preservation fee.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Tulum, Akumal, and Cenote

  • Pickup from hotel in morning
  • Guided tour of Tulum ruins
  • Swim with turtles at Akumal Beach
  • Visit and swim in sacred cenote
  • Enjoy lunch at local restaurant

The Experience

Tulum Ruins sit on the Caribbean shore as one of the most important pre-Columbian sites in the Riviera Maya. Your guide meets you at your Cancun or Playa del Carmen hotel in the morning and drives you south to the archaeological zone, where you'll walk through well-preserved temples and learn the history of this ancient Mayan city. The coastal setting frames the ruins—you stand looking out at the water the Maya built around. Spend time exploring at your own pace after the guided portion, then move on to the next stop.

Akumal Beach is a turtle sanctuary where you wade into turquoise water and swim alongside sea turtles in their natural habitat. Keep your distance and do not touch them, but you'll see them gliding through the shallows alongside schools of tropical fish. The beach is where the day shifts from history to the living sea. After swimming, the group gathers for a buffet lunch at a comfortable restaurant nearby.

The final stop is Cenote 3 Zapotes, a freshwater pool deep in the Mayan jungle surrounded by ancient rock formations. You swim in crystal-clear water in a space the Maya once held sacred. The cenote closes out the day before the drive back to your hotel. The whole tour is 9 to 10 hours door-to-door, with a bilingual guide throughout. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included; transportation starts in Cancun and collects other guests along the way before the main bus departs.
