The Experience

After pickup from your hotel, you ride jungle-fringed roads toward Tulum while your guide explains the ancient Maya trade routes that crisscrossed the Yucatan. The archaeological site sits on coastal cliffs above the Caribbean, and once you arrive, a certified guide leads you through the walled city to the Castillo—the site's most prominent structure—where you learn about Maya rituals, worship and daily life. The tour gives you time to walk the grounds and take in the views over the turquoise water and Tulum's long white sand beach.

From the ruins, you head to Cenote Nohoch Nah Chich, a freshwater oasis ringed by jungle. You swim in the cenote's clear water, then change in the provided facilities before sitting down to a regional buffet lunch featuring authentic Yucatecan dishes, hibiscus water and horchata. The whole day—including the roughly four hours of bus travel to and from the attractions—runs about ten hours.

The tour suits families with children from age four onward, and the operator notes it is suitable for all fitness levels. Infants under three ride free. Restrooms and changing rooms are available at both the archaeological site and the cenote. If you are staying in Costa Mujeres, pickup is only available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so you'll need to choose one of those days when you book.
