Scuba Diving in Tulum: Learn and dive a cenote

Your first dive happens the same day you learn to dive.

Scuba diving in Tulum is a beginner course and first dive in a cenote, a freshwater lagoon surrounded by mangroves. You complete a 30-minute class on theory and safety, practice basic skills in the water with an instructor, then descend for a 30- to 40-minute dive. The course runs about five hours total. You can book one dive or two (one in the cenote and one in the sea). An instructor in English, Spanish or Portuguese stays with you throughout. Complimentary refreshments and snacks are included.

The experience

You arrive at a cenote (a natural sinkhole with crystal-clear freshwater, ringed by mangroves), and meet your instructor. The first 30 minutes is classroom time: you learn the theory of diving, how to use your equipment, and the safety rules that keep you safe underwater. It is not abstract. The instructor walks you through the exact skills you will need in the next few hours.

Then you get into the water. The practice session is shallow and controlled. You learn to breathe through the regulator, clear your mask, and move with the equipment until it feels natural. Once you are comfortable and have shown your instructor you can handle the basics, you are ready. The actual dive lasts 30 to 40 minutes. You descend into the cenote with your instructor at your side, moving slowly through the water and taking in the underwater landscape. The whole experience, from classroom to the moment you surface after your dive, takes about five hours.

If you want a second dive, you can add one: either another cenote dive or a sea dive, depending on which option you book at checkout. Refreshments and snacks are available between dives and after you finish. All taxes and fees are included in the price.
