Breathe underwater at Casa Cenote without committing to certification

Discovery Scuba Diving is a PADI introductory program at Casa Cenote, a cenote on Tulum's beach, where you learn diving basics in a classroom and pool, then make two open-water dives in the same day. The program requires no prior certification and fits into a single morning or afternoon. Transport from the dive shop, meals, snacks, water and all rental equipment are included. A live guide speaks English, Spanish, French or German.

The experience

The Discover Scuba program skips the multi-day certification course and puts you in the water the same day. You start in a classroom learning equipment and breathing technique, move to a pool to practice the core skills, then head to Casa Cenote itself for two dives among the mangroves and reef. The cenote sits right on the beach, so the transition from pool to open water is direct. A PADI instructor leads the whole sequence and stays with you underwater.

Casa Cenote's waters are shallow and sheltered, which is why the program works here: you're not fighting current or depth on your first dive. The light filters through the overhanging mangroves, and the reef life (fish, rays, turtles) is active enough that you see why people come back to diving. The two dives give you time to settle into the rhythm instead of rushing through one dive and calling it done.

The day runs about five hours total. Transport picks you up from Infinity2Diving and brings you back after the dives. Lunch and snacks are included, along with all rental gear. You'll need to fill out a health questionnaire before the water, and diving within 18 hours of flying isn't safe, so plan accordingly. A moderate level of fitness helps, and some medical conditions (asthma, heart issues) may rule out diving, so check with your doctor if you have concerns.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French and German.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

Can I do one dive instead of two?

Yes. The program offers a one-dive option at Casa Cenote if you want a shorter introduction, or the two-dive version that includes both the cenote and a reef site.

What does Casa Cenote actually look like underwater?

Casa Cenote is a shallow cenote with clear freshwater, mangrove roots visible overhead, and a reef section where the cenote meets the sea. Fish, rays and sometimes turtles move through the space, and the light filtering through the mangroves creates the visibility and color the site is known for.

Do I need to know how to swim?

The program assumes you're comfortable in water and have at least moderate fitness. You don't need diving experience, but panic or severe anxiety in confined spaces can make the pool practice difficult.

How soon after flying can I dive?

Diving within 18 hours of flying is not recommended due to decompression risk. If you're arriving by air, plan the dive for the next day or later.
