The experience

The day starts inside the caves. You walk through Rio Secreto's underground passages, swim in the clear cenote pools and see the rock formations the reserve is built around. That's the foundation. The part that made Rio Secreto famous. But Rio Secreto Plus keeps going. After the cave section, you move into the jungle on a bike, then rappel down into Xibalbá, the legendary Mayan underworld, a cenote accessed only this way. The three ziplines come last, strung between the trees above the reserve, so you're moving through the canopy after you've already been underground and on the ground.

A professional guide leads the whole thing in English or Spanish, and all the gear (harnesses, helmets, rappelling equipment, bike) comes with it. The pace is built for moderate fitness. The operator flags that poor cardiovascular health and spinal injuries aren't compatible with this one, and you'll want comfortable walking shoes because the cave sections involve uneven ground and water. Lunch is a buffet included in the price, and light refreshments come during the day. The five hours is real time in the reserve, not counting transport.

Pickup depends on which option you choose at checkout. Transportation from Riviera Maya hotels or from Cancun airport are both available. If you're staying elsewhere, admission-only is an option and public transport to the reserve is nearby. Children from age 7 can go if an adult is with them. Bring extra cash or a card if you want to buy souvenir photos, additional food or items inside the reserve.
