experience

What’s the experience like?

We were already a bit damp from the humidity by the time our guide, Rodrigo, handed out helmets at Rio Secreto. I was still trying to figure out how to tuck my swimsuit under my shirt without looking ridiculous. He grinned and said not to worry — everyone looks funny in these helmets anyway. The entrance to the cave was just a few steps away, but honestly it felt like we’d crossed into another world. Cool air hit my face and there was this earthy smell — kind of like wet stone and old leaves. We waded into the underground river and I remember the water being colder than I expected. Rodrigo pointed out tiny bats clinging overhead (I nearly missed them) and explained how these caves were sacred to the Maya. I tried to imagine what it would be like finding this place centuries ago, torchlight flickering on those rock formations.

After swimming through that silent darkness — which is weirdly peaceful once you get used to it — we swapped helmets for bikes and pedaled along a narrow jungle path. My legs were still shaky from the water but somehow that made it more fun. There was this moment when a bright blue butterfly zipped right past my handlebars and I almost lost my balance laughing. The jungle here isn’t quiet; there’s always something chirping or rustling in the leaves. Next up was rappelling down into Xibalbá (Rodrigo called it “the Maya underworld” with a wink). My hands got sweaty on the rope but hitting the soft earth at the bottom felt like landing on another planet.

I didn’t expect to enjoy ziplining as much as I did — heights aren’t really my thing — but soaring over treetops with wind in my ears turned out to be one of those memories that sticks around. Lunch after all that tasted better than it probably should have (maybe adrenaline makes food better?). We sat together at long tables sharing stories about who screamed loudest on the ziplines. On the ride back, I could still feel cool cave water on my skin and kept thinking about that first step underground — you know?
