Mexican Cooking Class Playa del Carmen: Make Authentic Dishes
Cook a multi-course Mexican lunch from scratch in a home kitchen, not a demonstration studio
Isa's Authentic Mexican Cooking School offers a hands-on class in downtown Playa del Carmen where you learn to prepare a complete lunch: two salsas, two types of guacamole, corn tortillas, a seasonal beverage, and one main dish you choose from regional options like mole poblano, fish tikin xic, or cochinita pibil. The class starts at the local market to select ingredients, then moves to the home kitchen for three hours of cooking with Chef Isa or Chef Pavel, both professional chefs with over a decade of experience.
The experience
You start at the local market in downtown Playa del Carmen, where you'll walk through the stalls with your chef, discuss the day's menu, and pick which main dish to prepare: mole poblano, green mole, tikin xic fish, ceviche, chicken tinga, or one of several other regional specialties. This is where you learn to recognize authentic Mexican ingredients and understand what makes each one matter to the dish. Then you walk to Isa's home kitchen, a working space designed for small-group instruction, never a commercial cooking studio.
The class is hands-on and some demonstration, so you're doing the work: making two types of guacamole from scratch, preparing traditional salsas, rolling corn tortillas by hand, and building your chosen main dish from its component parts. You'll learn cooking techniques from Chef Isa or Chef Pavel, both professional chefs with more than ten years in the kitchen, and they'll explain not just how to make each dish but why the steps matter. The group stays under eight people, so there's room to ask questions and get feedback on what you're doing.
By the end of three hours, you sit down to eat the lunch you made. Bottled water and traditional Mexican agua frescas come with the class, and you leave with printed recipes so you can cook these dishes at home. Seasonal ingredients may shift what's available, but the structure stays the same: market, technique, a complete meal you built yourself.

Is this one for you?Book this class if you have a free afternoon in Playa del Carmen and want to spend it making food rather than watching a chef demonstrate. The hands-on format means you're cooking the whole time, not observing, so you leave knowing how to make these dishes yourself.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (8 to 17 years). Children under 8 can't be included in the booking.
What main dishes can I choose to prepare in the class?
You pick one main dish from options that change based on the season and what's fresh at the market. Choices include mole poblano with chicken, green mole with chicken or pork or fish, tikin xic fish from the Yucatan, ceviche, chicken tinga, tacos al pastor, chile relleno with cheese or shrimp, and chiles en nogada (available only in August). The chef will discuss what's in season when you arrive at the market.
How many people are usually in the class?
The class is limited to 8 students maximum, so it stays small and you get individual attention from the chef. This size lets everyone have space to work and time to ask questions about technique.
Do I need to know how to cook to join this class?
No prior cooking experience is required. Chef Isa and Chef Pavel teach both technique and the "why" behind each step, so beginners and experienced cooks both learn something. The class is structured so you're making a complete, multi-course lunch even if you've never cooked Mexican food before.
What's included in the class fee, and what do I need to arrange myself?
All ingredients for the multi-course meal, bottled water, traditional agua frescas, the small-group instruction, and printed recipes are included. You arrange your own transportation to the class. The school is happy to provide directions and information on how to get there. Gratuities are not included.
