The Experience

I’ll admit, I almost forgot my certification card — classic me. The guy at Cabo Trek just laughed and said it happens all the time, so no stress. We met our dive guide (Miguel, who’s been doing this forever) and a couple from Vancouver who’d already spotted pelicans fighting over fish scraps at the marina. The boat was smaller than I pictured but honestly that felt better — less crowd, more space for nerves to settle.

Heading out along the Tourist Corridor, I could smell salt and sunscreen mixing in the air. Miguel checked our gear twice (I appreciated that), then started talking about how Santa Maria Bay sometimes gets these schools of yellow snapper so thick you can’t see your buddy. He pointed out Whale Head rock — apparently if you squint it really does look like a whale? Maybe I just needed more coffee.

The first descent was at Chileno Bay. Water was warm but not bathwater — just enough to wake you up. There’s this moment when you’re floating above the reef and suddenly everything goes quiet except your own bubbles. Saw a turtle gliding past some coral fans, and a moray eel peeking out like it was judging my fin technique (fair). I still think about that silence underwater — how different the world feels when all you hear is your breath and distant clicks from somewhere in the rocks. It’s not always perfect visibility or textbook conditions, but maybe that’s what makes each dive feel real.
