The experience
You arrive at the dive shop, meet your PADI instructor, complete a health questionnaire and get fitted with gear. During the setup (wetsuit, tank, weights, the works) your guide walks you through what each piece does and how it sits on your body. Once you're ready, a short five-minute boat ride takes you to the dive site in the Cabo San Lucas Marine Park.
In the water, you don't jump straight into exploring. Your instructor takes you through basic skills first, such as how to clear your mask, how to breathe steadily and how to control your buoyancy. These skills aren't complicated, and once you've picked them up and built some confidence, the real dive starts. You descend with your guide, stay in close contact, and spend time looking at what's actually down there. The dive stays shallow, with your instructor supervising you the whole time.
Avoid diving within 18 hours of a flight. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions (asthma, heart issues, spinal injuries), check with your doctor first. The health form will ask about these. No alcohol for at least 12 hours before you go.
