The Experience

When we pulled up to the park outside Cabo San Lucas, a guy named Jorge greeted us with a grin and a joke about my sunburn (I guess it was obvious). He handed us helmets and goggles that still smelled faintly of dust and sunscreen. Before anything else, he insisted we check out the white lions—never thought I’d see those in Baja. They were sleepy but somehow regal, just lounging there while kids pointed and giggled. I liked how nobody rushed us; it felt like visiting someone’s backyard more than a tour.

The ATV part started off bumpy—literally. My partner stalled twice before getting the hang of it (Jorge just laughed and waved us on). Once we got going, the air changed; you could taste salt from the ocean even though we were weaving through dry canyons. The engines echoed against rock walls, and every so often Jorge would point out something—an old cactus, or where you might spot whales if you’re lucky. The Pacific showed up suddenly at the end of a ridge, all blue and loud, and I remember thinking I’d never seen sand look so white against that water.

I didn’t expect to like horseback riding as much as I did. The horses seemed patient with beginners (mine kept flicking his ears back at me like he was checking if I was still there). We walked right along Playa Migriño—sometimes close enough to feel spray on my jeans when the breeze picked up. It was quieter than I thought it would be; just hoofbeats and waves, no music or chatter except for Jorge telling stories about growing up nearby. Afterward there was tequila tasting—I’m not sure if it helped with my nerves or made me laugh harder at my own Spanish.
