The PADI Open Water Diver course on Isla Mujeres combines eLearning theory (completed online or the day before arrival) with two days of in-water training: confined water practice in the mornings, open water dives in the afternoons at sites including MUSA, the underwater museum of life-size sculptures. You'll have a live guide in English or Spanish, and all scuba equipment and certification fees are included. Children from age 10 are welcome.
The Experience
Start with the eLearning component, which you can finish before you arrive or complete the day before your in-water training begins. This online theory work gives you a year of access to the course material and removes the need to sit in a classroom. Once that's done, you move into the water for two mornings of confined water practice—the controlled environment where you learn to handle the equipment and master the skills you'll need.
After each morning's confined water session, you head out in the afternoon for open water dives. The course takes you to some of the region's most recognized dive sites, including MUSA, the Underwater Museum of Art. MUSA sits in the waters around Cancun and Isla Mujeres and holds over 500 life-size sculptures placed on the seafloor to encourage coral growth. You'll dive among them as part of your certification requirements. All scuba equipment is provided, and your guide—fluent in English or Spanish—is with you throughout the in-water days.
The full certification can be completed within three days, which means you can start diving independently as soon as you finish. You'll need at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and the course isn't recommended for pregnant travelers or those with cardiovascular concerns. Public transportation options are available near the dive center if you need them.
