The Experience
Ever wonder what the ocean smells like from the inside? I didn’t, not really, until we slid down into that little submarine off the coast of Mauritius. The air was cool and sort of metallic, mixed with something salty — not unpleasant, just different. Our guide, Rajiv, had this calm way of explaining everything (even when my nephew kept asking if we’d see a shark). He grinned and said, “Maybe — but the fish are friendlier.” That made us all laugh, even my mom.
The shuttle boat out to the mothership took about fifteen minutes. Sun on our faces, wind kicking up my hair. There was this brief moment where I thought: am I actually doing this? Anyway, once we got to the big boat, they handed us cold juice and gave a quick safety talk. The submarine itself looked smaller than I expected — almost toy-like — but inside it felt safe. Rajiv pointed out how thick the glass was (he tapped it for good measure), then we started sinking down. You could hear soft creaks as we went deeper. It’s weirdly quiet under there except for Rajiv’s voice and the occasional bubble tapping on the window.
We drifted past coral gardens that looked like someone’s forgotten dream — all pale pinks and oranges. At 35 meters down, he steered us right up to the Star Hope Shipwreck. It’s eerie seeing something so big just lying there on its side, fish darting in and out like it’s their playground now. My niece pressed her nose against the glass trying to spot every color she could name. I caught myself just staring at a tiny blue fish for way too long. There’s something about being surrounded by all that water that makes you feel both small and lucky at once.
After forty-five minutes or so (felt shorter), we surfaced back to sunlight. Juice again — sweeter this time or maybe that was just relief talking — before heading back to shore on the shuttle boat. The whole thing took about two hours but honestly? Parts of it still float around in my head whenever I hear water bubbling in a kettle or catch a whiff of sea air somewhere unexpected.
