Spend a morning in the water with dolphins, then track whales across open seas

Swim with wild dolphins in Tamarin Bay and whale watch on the open sea in Mauritius in a single morning and afternoon, with hotel pickup and dropoff, professional skippers, snorkeling equipment and bottled water included. The skipper briefs you on dolphin and whale behavior, sustainable viewing practices and water safety before you enter the water. Dolphins appear in at least 90% of departures; if they don't, you get a free second outing for the dolphin swim alone.

Step-by-step itinerary

Swim with dolphins and whale watching

  • Board speedboat and receive briefing
  • Swim with wild dolphins at Tamarin Bay
  • Snorkel at The Aquarium if time permits
  • Whale watching tour on open seas
  • Listen to educational commentary by skippers

The Experience

You start at your hotel and travel by speedboat to Tamarin Bay, where the skipper briefs you on the types of dolphins you'll encounter, their habits, sustainable watching guidelines, boat safety and swimming procedures. Then you enter the water with the skipper alongside you to swim with the dolphins in their natural environment. Depending on time and animal behavior, you may also visit The Aquarium, a snorkeling site with coral and tropical fish, before heading to the open sea for whale watching.

The afternoon shifts to whale watching on the open seas. The skipper explains the whale species you might see and the guidelines for sustainable observation. Humpback whales migrate past Mauritius between July and September or October on their way from the South Pole to breeding grounds near the equator; sperm whales can be spotted almost year-round. You'll hear educational commentary as you watch them in their natural habitat. The order and timing of the dolphin swim and whale watching may shift depending on where the animals are that day.

The activity runs 4 to 5 hours total. Hotel pickup and dropoff are included, along with snorkeling equipment, bottled water and soft drinks. The guide speaks English and French. Children from age 3 are welcome. If dolphins don't appear—which happens in fewer than 10% of departures—you get a free second outing for the dolphin swim only, lasting 2.5 hours. Whale sightings happen in about 60% of trips; if whales don't appear, no refund is offered due to fuel costs.
