The Experience

Our guide Hassan was loading coolers onto the speedboat when I asked him which island people skip — the one tourists miss. He laughed and said nobody skips anything on this trip, they just run out of time. That's the thing about a five-island day: you're moving. The boat leaves early, picks up from your hotel, and heads straight for the southeast coast where the real lagoon sits. Île aux Cerfs comes first — white sand, clear water, the kind of beach that looks photoshopped until you're standing on it. You get time to swim, walk around, take pictures. It's not rushed, but it's not a full afternoon either.

Then the boat cuts across to Grand River South East, where the waterfall drops near the mouth of Mauritius' longest river. The water's darker here, the landscape changes — less resort-postcard, more actual island. After that you're at Île aux Phares and Île de la Passe, where Hassan pointed out how the two sides of the island do completely different things. One side is the calm lagoon, turquoise and flat. Turn the corner and the Indian Ocean is hammering the rocks. You can see it happen in real time. The snorkeling gear comes out at Île aux Aigrettes — the reef isn't massive, but the fish are there, and the water's warm enough that you don't think about time.

Lunch happens back at Île aux Cerfs, and this is where the "all-inclusive" part actually matters. Local BBQ, cold drinks included, snacks throughout the day. No separate bill, no "would you like to add," no surprises at the end. The boat ride back takes about an hour depending on conditions, and you're done by early afternoon. The whole thing runs around five to six hours from pickup to drop-off. Small groups mean you're not packed in with fifty people, and the crew knows the route — they're not figuring it out as they go.
