Scuba diving in Mauritius: exploration dives for certified divers
Dive the volcanic southeast and come up with stories about what lives down there
Exploration dives in Mauritius are boat-based scuba dives for certified divers on the southeast coast, where volcanic structures create caves, tunnels and arches alongside reef systems and shipwrecks. A live guide leads the dive, equipment is provided, and the itinerary includes briefing, 45 minutes or more of underwater exploration, and a debrief on return; pickup is included and children are welcome from age 7.
The Experience
The southeast side of Mauritius holds a different underwater world than the rest of the island. Volcanic formations create caves, tunnels and arches that run through the reef, and the visibility stays clear because no rivers feed into this coast. The trade winds can chop the surface, but underneath the water stays calm and transparent. You'll see larger marine life here than on other sides of the island—the kind of encounter that changes how you think about a dive.
The day starts with pickup and transport to the dive site. Once you arrive, you don't put on the heavy equipment until you're ready to board the boat; the operator keeps divers from standing around weighted down on land. A live guide briefs you on the site conditions and the dive plan, then leads you down for 45 minutes or more of exploration. The guide stays with your group throughout, watching for safety while you navigate the formations and spot whatever marine life is moving through that day. After you surface and return to shore, there's a debrief and the operator cleans and stores the equipment.
All scuba gear is included—tank, regulator, wetsuit, weight belt, fins, mask and BCD. You bring your certification card. The guide speaks English, Italian, French or German, and children from age 7 can join if they're certified divers. Pickup is part of the booking, so you don't arrange your own transport to the site.

What's the underwater landscape like on the southeast coast of Mauritius?
The southeast coast is volcanic in structure, with caves, tunnels and arches running through the reef system. Visibility is consistently clear because no rivers empty into this side of the island, and larger marine life is common here compared to other areas around Mauritius.
How long do I actually spend underwater on these exploration dives?
The underwater exploration and fun dive portion lasts 45 minutes or more, depending on conditions and the group's comfort. The full outing, including briefing, boat transport and debrief, takes about two hours.
What scuba equipment is included, and do I need to bring my own?
All diving equipment is provided: tank, regulator, wetsuit, weight belt, fins, mask and BCD. You need to bring your diver certification card; no other gear is required.
Can children join these dives, and what's the age requirement?
Children are welcome from age 7, provided they hold a valid scuba certification. The guide will brief younger divers on the site conditions just as they would any adult diver.
Do I need to arrange my own transport to the dive site?
No. Pickup is included in the booking, so the operator handles getting you to the site and back.
What languages does the guide speak?
The live guide speaks English, Italian, French and German, so you can choose the language that suits you best when you book.
