Exploration dives in Mauritius are guided dives for certified divers in the island's largest lagoon, covering boat dives, shore entries, wreck exploration and drift dives. A guide in English, French or German leads the group; pickup is included and children from age 7 are welcome. The activity runs about two hours and covers all fees and taxes.

The Experience

You arrive at the meeting point with your certification card and log book. Paperwork gets filled in, equipment is assembled, and the guide briefs the group on the site conditions and the plan for the dive. From there, the day splits depending on what the water holds: boat dives drop you over reefs or wrecks; shore dives start from the sand; drift dives let the current carry you across a stretch of reef; wreck dives take you into the structure of a sunken ship; canyon dives follow the contours of the seafloor. Night dives are also offered, which shift the whole rhythm and the species you encounter.

The largest lagoon in Mauritius means the sites stay protected from open ocean swell, so conditions tend to be calmer than the wild south coast. Reefs here run thick with fish—the colorful abundance the description promises is real, not marketing. Wrecks give you a different kind of exploration: structure, shadows, the sense of moving through something built by people now long gone. A guide in your language stays with the group throughout, watching depth, air consumption and how everyone is moving, and points out what is worth seeing—a species, a formation, a detail most divers would miss on their own.

Can I do these dives if I learned to dive only recently?

Yes. The dives are for certified divers of any level—the guide will ask about your experience and log book and will choose sites and depths that match the group's comfort. Recent certification is fine as long as you hold a card.

What's the difference between a boat dive and a shore dive?

A boat dive means you enter the water from the vessel, usually over a deeper site or a wreck. A shore dive means you walk into the water from the beach or rocks and explore from there. Both happen on the same day depending on conditions and what the guide plans.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?

No. All gear is provided—wetsuit, tank, weights, regulator, BCD and fins. Bring your certification card, log book and a towel. Sunscreen, underwater camera and a dive light are your own if you want them.

What language will the guide speak?

The guide speaks English, French or German—you choose when you book. The briefing, the dive itself and any explanation of what you see happens in your chosen language.

Is this safe for children?

Children from age 7 are welcome on these dives. Younger children cannot participate in the underwater portion, but they can come along on the boat and watch from the surface.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If conditions are unsafe—strong wind, high swell, poor visibility—the dive may be rescheduled or moved to a different site. The guide makes that call on the morning of the dive based on what the water looks like.
