The experience
The safari starts with a 6am pickup from your hotel in Mombasa or Diani. The drive to Bachuma gate takes roughly three hours along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, and game watching begins as soon as you enter the park. Aruba Dam, a waterhole built by the British Army in 1952, is one of the stops where wildlife congregates. After the morning game drive, you check in at Voi Wildlife Lodge in time for lunch.
The afternoon gives you time to rest at the lodge until 4pm, when the evening game drive begins and runs until sundown. Dinner and overnight accommodation follow at the lodge. Day two starts early with breakfast, then another game drive en route to the park exit gate. From there, the drive back to Mombasa, Diani or the airport takes the afternoon, and you arrive by mid-day.
Tsavo East spans 13,747 square kilometers across the Taita Taveta District, divided into east and west sections by the A109 road and railway line. The park sits between 1,200 and 3,000 feet above sea level and has been gazetted since 1948, making it the oldest and largest game park in Kenya.

Is this one for you?The overnight format fits travelers who want more than a single afternoon's game viewing and prefer to stay inside the park rather than drive back the same day. The early 6am start and two game drives (morning and evening) maximize wildlife sightings across different times of day when animals are most active.
