From there, the route moves through the heart of Mombasa to the four iconic tusks erected for Queen Elizabeth's arrival in 1952, which now mark the entrance to the city proper.

The Old Town is where the day opens up. Descendants of Swahili, Arab, Portuguese, and British settlers still live in the narrow streets, and the architecture (carved wooden doors, coral stone buildings, narrow alleyways) shows each culture's mark. Then comes Akamba Handicraft Market, where wood carvers work on masks, shields, jewelry and home pieces. The Akamba tradition of carving goes back more than 100 years, and you'll see the work and learn the craft's history before the tour ends.
