The experience
The route starts with a pickup from your Mombasa hotel or airport, then follows the Trans-African highway inland toward Taita Hills. Lunch waits at Taita Hills Resort before the drive deepens into the sanctuary and arrives at Salt Lick Lodge. The lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole where you watch animals drink and move through the evening from the dining area during dinner. After an overnight stay, an early morning game drive catches the sunrise and morning wildlife activity before the return drive to Mombasa, with a complementary lunch stop at Kilimanjaro curio shop on the way back. Arrival is typically between 3 and 4 pm.
Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a public community conservancy and wildlife corridor connecting Tsavo West National Park. The terrain holds all the big cats, elephants and multiple antelope species, with a river looping through the park that creates strong wildlife viewing during the game drives. Salt Lick Lodge itself has earned recognition as one of the world's most photographed safari lodges, built to sit above the waterhole rather than beside it. The neighboring Taita Hills Safari Resort & Spa houses a museum displaying World War 1 memorabilia tied to the region's history.
Full board means breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, along with bottled water and all entrance fees. Transportation runs in a customized safari van. This operator runs the only daily departure from Mombasa and Diani areas on this route.
