The experience
The drive from Mombasa or Diani takes two and a half hours along the main road to the park. A professional driver-guide picks you up from your coastal hotel in the morning and handles all the navigation. You enter Tsavo East and begin game viewing immediately, heading toward your lodge for lunch. The afternoon brings a second drive in search of elephants, lions, buffalo and giraffe. The park holds some of the world's largest elephant populations, and the animals here are known for their distinctive reddish dust-colored hides.
Day two starts before breakfast. After eating at the lodge, you set out on a long morning game drive as you make your way back toward the park exit, watching for wildlife the whole way. A lunch stop breaks the journey before the final drive back to Mombasa or Diani, where you arrive in the afternoon and are dropped at your hotel. The itinerary includes mineral water in the vehicle, all national park fees, meals at the lodge and restaurant stops, and accommodation for one night.
Tsavo East is one of the world's greatest wildlife sanctuaries, home not only to the large predators and herbivores but also to a variety of bird life: crowned cranes, lovebirds and secretary birds make appearances during the drives. The park's size and diversity mean each game drive can turn up different animals depending on where the guide takes you and what is moving that day.
