You’ll get up close with elephants in Amboseli, spot lions in Tsavo East, and unwind at comfortable lodges—all with private transport from Mombasa. If you want real wildlife moments without crowds or rush, this trip’s got you covered.
The alarm went off before sunrise—always a bit of a shock, but the air outside was cool and smelled faintly of the ocean as we left Mombasa behind. The drive to Tsavo East took about two hours; we watched the sky turn pink over the acacia trees. Our guide, Daniel, pointed out tiny villages along the road and slowed down for herds of goats crossing. By mid-morning, we rolled up to Voi Safari Lodge. I remember the first thing I noticed: vervet monkeys darting around the parking lot, eyeing our snacks.
Lunch was simple but filling—rice, beans, some grilled chicken—and then there was time to just sit on the terrace and watch elephants gather at the waterhole below. Around four, we piled back into the jeep for our first real game drive. The red dust clung to everything; you could taste it if you smiled too wide. We spotted giraffes nibbling on thorn trees and a lioness stretched out in the shade. Back at the lodge after sunset, everyone was tired but buzzing with stories over dinner.
The next day started early again—coffee and mandazi before heading out for one last look at Tsavo’s wildlife. After checkout, it was a long but scenic drive toward Amboseli. The landscape changed slowly; by lunchtime at Kilima Camp, you could see Mount Kilimanjaro peeking through clouds in the distance. In Amboseli’s afternoon light, elephants wandered right past our vehicle, so close you could hear them breathing. We ended up swapping photos with another family by the campfire that night.
On our final morning, we squeezed in one more game drive—lots of zebra and even a shy cheetah off in the grass. After breakfast, we packed up and headed back toward Mombasa. There was a quick stop for lunch at a roadside spot (the chapati was fresh off the pan), then a short visit to Colobus Conservation near Diani Beach before getting dropped off back in town.
