The experience
The tour starts with a hotel pickup in Mombasa and a drive into Taita Sanctuary, a private reserve covering 100 square kilometers within the Taita Hills. You arrive at Salt Lick Lodge for lunch: a structure built atop stilts that overlooks a permanent water hole. The lodge's elevated design puts you at eye level with animals as they approach to drink, turning the afternoon and evening into continuous game viewing from the thatched rondavels and walkways. An afternoon game drive takes you deeper into the sanctuary to search for lions, cheetahs, baboons, giraffes and elephants. Dinner and overnight happen at the lodge.
The second day begins with an early morning game drive, when wildlife is most active. You return for breakfast, then drive back to Mombasa with a final game drive en route, giving you one more chance to spot animals before you're dropped at your hotel. The tour includes all meals (lunch, dinner and breakfast), sanctuary entry fees, private transportation and one liter of mineral water per day. Your driver is multilingual and experienced in the reserve.
Children under 5 cannot stay at Salt Lick Lodge for safety reasons (the stilts and elevated walkways present a risk), so families with young children are booked at Taita Hills Game Lodge instead, which sits within the same sanctuary and offers the same wildlife viewing and game drives.
