The Experience
You get picked up from your beach hotel in Mombasa early in the morning and driven south to the Taita Hills Game Sanctuary. The road itself is a game drive — you'll spot wildlife on the way. By midday you arrive at Salt Lick Lodge, eat lunch, rest, then head out again for an afternoon and evening game drive through the sanctuary hunting for lion and other animals until sunset. The lodge's structure is the thing: two-story rondavels topped with peaked thatch roofs sit on stilts directly over a series of waterholes. Open-air bridges connect them. You get panoramic views of the sanctuary and the plains from your room, and animals come to drink below you.
Your second morning starts with an early breakfast, then a half-day game drive through the sanctuary. Around noon you depart for Mombasa, stopping for a game drive and lunch along the way. You're dropped at your beach hotel by afternoon. The whole trip runs on a fixed schedule — transport, accommodation, meals and game drive timing are all arranged, so you don't build the day yourself.
A live guide travels with you and speaks English, Spanish, French or German. Bottled water is provided in the vehicle. The lodge has been photographed extensively and sits in the middle of the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary; the neighboring Taita Hills Safari Resort & Spa holds a museum of World War 1 memorabilia if you want to visit.
