The experience
The Salt Lick Lodge is not a conventional building. A complex of two-story rondavels sits on stilts over a series of water holes, connected by open-air bridges and topped with peaked thatch roofs. The structure was designed entirely around game viewing. From the lodge, you watch wildlife approach the water below while you rest between drives. This is where you spend the night after your first afternoon and evening of game drives in the sanctuary.
Day one starts with departure from your Mombasa beach hotel and a game drive en route to the sanctuary. After lunch at the lodge, you head out again until sunset, searching for lions and other wildlife from the comfort of a safari vehicle. The second morning begins early with breakfast, then a half-day game drive through the sanctuary. Around noon you depart for Mombasa, taking part in another game drive and lunch along the way before arrival back at your hotel. Your guide speaks English, French, German or Italian throughout.
The route covers the African landscape at two different times of day (the golden-hour wildlife activity of late afternoon and the cooler, often more active early morning), so your chances of sightings span both rhythms. All meals and accommodation are arranged. You bring only yourself and your camera.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What animals might I see on a game drive in Taita Hills Game Sanctuary?
Lions are the main draw of the sanctuary, and the itinerary specifically mentions searching for them. The sanctuary also holds other African wildlife, though the reference material does not name a specific roster of species you will encounter on any given drive.
How does the Salt Lick Lodge structure work for game viewing?
The lodge is built on stilts over water holes, so wildlife comes to drink below while you watch from the rondavels and bridges. The elevated design gives you a panoramic view of the sanctuary landscape and the animals moving across it, without leaving the lodge grounds.
What time do the game drives happen each day?
Day one includes an afternoon and evening drive until sunset after you arrive and have lunch. Day two starts with an early morning game drive before breakfast, then a half-day drive on the return journey to Mombasa around noon.
Is the drive from Mombasa to Taita Hills included in the tour?
Yes. You depart from your beach hotel in Mombasa, enjoy a game drive along the route, and arrive at Taita Hills Lodge for lunch. The return journey on day two also includes a game drive and lunch before you are dropped at your hotel.
