The experience
The boat leaves Bamburi Beach Hotel's Watersports Center at 9am and heads into Mtwapa Creek, where the captain points out the mangrove ecosystem and shares the area's history as you cruise past the trees. The crew handles navigation while you watch the shoreline and water change. On the return from the creek, you stop at the reef to see what lies beneath before moving to the Coral Gardens, where the real snorkeling begins.
At the Coral Gardens, you get in the water with all snorkeling gear already fitted: mask, fins, snorkel and life jacket provided. The activity here is hands-on: you feed the fish by hand, watching them respond in real time, then explore the reef on your own pace. Turtles and colorful fish move through the area, and the protected waters of Mombasa Marine Park keep the ecosystem stable enough that sightings are routine. The crew stays nearby but lets you move freely underwater.
Bottled water is included, and the four-hour window means you're back by early afternoon. The trip suits all fitness levels, and children from age one can come along. A live guide speaks English, French or German throughout, so language is not a barrier.

- life jackets for everyone.

Is this one for you? This works best for small groups or families who want hands-on snorkeling without a long boat commute. The creek and gardens are close to Mombasa, and the four-hour window fits easily into a half-day schedule. If you prefer a longer offshore expedition or deeper reef diving, look for full-day or advanced options instead.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, French and German.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (4 to 11 years); Infant (1 to 3 years).
What exactly happens during the Mtwapa Creek part of the trip?
The boat takes you through the mangroves of Mtwapa Creek while the captain and crew explain the ecosystem and local history. You're on the water watching the shoreline. This is the scenic, educational portion before you reach the snorkeling sites.
Will I see turtles and fish, or is that not guaranteed?
Turtles and colorful fish live in the Coral Gardens and the reef year-round in the protected Mombasa Marine Park, so sightings are typical. The marine life is there. What you see depends on water conditions and time of day, but the area is known for both species.
Do I need to bring my own snorkeling gear?
No. All snorkeling equipment is provided, including the mask, fins, snorkel and life jacket. You arrive with nothing and leave with everything you need already fitted and tested.
How long is the snorkeling itself versus the boat ride?
The full trip is four hours from start to finish. The creek exploration and transit take up the first portion, then you spend the remaining time in and around the water at the Coral Gardens and reef, where you do the actual snorkeling.
