The experience
The tour begins with hotel pickup at 5:00 am, well before sunrise, then follows the Mombasa–Nairobi road to the Bachuma gate entrance. A short stop at the first gate precedes your entry into the park. Once inside, the first game drive focuses on spotting the red elephants Tsavo is known for, along with lions (historically called the "Man eaters of Tsavo"), buffalo, cheetah, giraffe and antelopes. The route takes you to Aruba dam, where wildlife congregates especially during the dry season.
After the morning drive, you stop for lunch at a lodge inside the park. The afternoon game drive covers different terrain and offers another window to see leopard, rhino, waterbuck, Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk, Hirola and various bird species. The park's size and variety mean sightings vary by season and time of day, but the two-drive structure gives you multiple chances across different parts of the landscape. You exit the park in the late afternoon and return to your hotel, resort or airport in Mombasa by evening.
The vehicle is a proper safari car with a pop-up roof that lets you stand and photograph without leaving your seat. Your guide speaks English or French and knows the park's wildlife patterns and locations. Bottled water is provided during the drives, and the full day, including travel time, runs about nine hours from pickup to drop-off.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and French.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 15 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What animals am I most likely to see on a Tsavo East day tour?
Tsavo East holds large herds of red elephants, buffalo, lions, leopard, rhino, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, cheetah, waterbuck, Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk and Hirola, plus many bird species. The Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) are all present in the park, though sightings depend on season and location within the reserve.
Why is the pickup so early in the morning?
The 5:00 am pickup gets you to the park entrance as dawn breaks, when wildlife is most active and visible. Early morning is the prime game-viewing window before animals retreat from the heat, so starting before sunrise maximizes your chances of sightings during the first drive.
How long is the drive from Mombasa to Tsavo East?
The journey from Mombasa to the Bachuma gate follows the Mombasa–Nairobi road and includes a short stop at the first gate. Travel time is built into the nine-hour tour duration, which runs from pickup to drop-off at your hotel or airport.
Is lunch included, and what is it like?
Lunch at a lodge inside the park is included in the tour. The stop breaks up the two game drives and gives you a chance to rest and refuel before the afternoon wildlife viewing.
What should I bring or wear for this tour?
Bring bottled water (provided in the vehicle), sunscreen, a hat and binoculars. Neutral or earth-toned clothing helps with wildlife photography. The pop-up roof vehicle offers shade and standing room, but the sun is intense in the park, especially during midday hours.
