The experience

The route starts with a 3–4 hour drive from Mombasa to Tsavo East, with a stop to refresh along the way. On arrival at the park gates, your guide verifies entry and briefs you on what to expect inside. The first afternoon brings a game drive from the lodge, then a full day of driving on day two with enroute sightings as you move between stops. Tsavo East is known for its red dust, large elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.

Days two and three take you to Amboseli National Reserve, where you'll do an afternoon game drive on arrival and a full day of driving with packed lunch on day three. The park sits at the base of Kilimanjaro and holds dense concentrations of wildlife. Day four includes an early game drive before breakfast, then an optional Maasai village visit (charged separately at $20 per person), followed by a drive to Taita and an afternoon game drive at Saltlick Lodge. On the final morning, you'll have one more pre-breakfast game drive before the return journey to Mombasa, with wildlife sightings along the way.

Your driver-guide makes stops whenever animals appear and positions the van for photographs. Common sightings include lions, elephants, eland, cheetahs, buffalo, gazelles, impalas, warthogs, zebras, hippos, leopards, ostriches and hyenas. Four nights' accommodation, all breakfasts and lunches, four dinners and drinking water are included. You arrange your own tips and any souvenirs or personal items.
