The experience
The tour starts with a meet-and-assist service at the Eilat border, then travels north along the Desert Highway into Jordan. You reach Petra (known as the rose-red city for the color of its rock), where a guide leads you through structures built over more than 10,000 years of human settlement. The Nabataeans carved intricate tombs into the mountainside, and later inhabitants added temples, a theater, a colonnaded street and churches. A three-hour guided walk covers the major sites. A 700-meter horse ride from the main gate is available if you want it, though the handler expects a tip.
After lunch in Petra, you head to Wadi Rum (also called the Valley of the Moon), a valley cut into sandstone and granite rock 60 kilometers east of Aqaba. You'll spend the night at a Bedouin camp with a BBQ dinner and breakfast. The next morning, a four-to-five-hour jeep tour with an English-speaking guide takes you through the desert landscape. You'll get a box lunch, mineral water, Bedouin tea and the hospitality of the camp. Optional add-ons include a one-hour hot-air balloon ride early in the morning (booking required in advance) or camel rides by the hour, both arranged on arrival.
A brand-new car with an English-speaking driver and assistant handles all transfers. Mineral water is provided throughout. The tour is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all fitness levels. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, and service animals are welcome.
