The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the color: Tokyo Station’s red bricks against a sky that can’t decide if it’s blue or gray. Our guide, Junko, waved a little flag (not too high, thankfully) and started off with a story about samurai passing through here centuries ago. I could still smell coffee drifting from somewhere behind us. Someone rushing for their train maybe. We weren’t rushing though. This wasn’t that kind of tour.

Walking toward the Imperial Palace felt almost unreal: like you’re suddenly part of some old movie but there are joggers zipping past in neon shoes and office workers bowing politely as they pass. Junko pointed out the stone bridge and explained how the shogun used to live right where we stood. I tried repeating “Nijubashi” after her. She laughed (kindly) at my accent. It was just an hour but somehow she managed to fit in bits about the emperor, secret moats, and even why Mondays and Fridays are quiet around here (palace closed). The air had that early spring chill: crisp but not biting.

We finished near a line of pine trees where Junko handed us this small booklet full of maps and tips for exploring more on our own. I liked that. It didn’t feel like she was trying to rush us off or sell anything extra. Just a gentle “enjoy your time in Tokyo.” I still think about those wide open spaces right in the middle of all that city noise. Makes you want to slow down for a second, you know?
