The experience
You start by meeting your local guide, who speaks fluent English and has planned the route around what you actually want to see. This is not a fixed itinerary. If you want to skip a stop, add a sake tasting at a local brewery, or end the day at a Kobe beef restaurant instead of walking further, the guide adjusts. The tour is private to your group, so the pace and the stops stay yours.
The core route moves through Kobe's layers. You'll pass through one of the city's two most popular shrines. This one is quieter than the other, without the bright orange gates, but important to locals for celebrations. Then Harborland and Meriken Park, a waterfront area with shops and eateries where you can browse or grab lunch. From there, Motomachi's shopping streets shift from cosmopolitan near Daimaru to generations-old family stores as you walk toward Kobe Station, then into Chinatown, which feels like stepping into a different city entirely. The mayor's former residence sits on grounds with European-designed stables, Japanese gardens with hidden corners, and a tradesman's home you can tour most days.
The 7-hour option adds Nunobiki Falls and the Herb Gardens on the mountain. You ride a rope-way gondola up (on the way you see the waterfall, foliage and the Kobe skyline), then walk garden paths with seasonal flowers, visit an essential oil museum, and pass through a greenhouse with a streaming river. A herb restaurant on the grounds serves courses with edible flowers if you want lunch there. The 4-hour tour covers the city center. The 7-hour captures the full landscape from ocean to mountain.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Japanese.
Can I add Kobe beef to the tour instead of ending at a restaurant?
Yes. Your guide can end the tour at a recommended Kobe beef restaurant so you can take your time with the meal, or arrange lunch at a restaurant during the experience if you prefer to eat while the tour is still going. Either way, the cost of the meal is separate from the tour price.
What's the difference between the 4-hour and 7-hour options?
The 4-hour tour covers Kobe's city center: shrines, Harborland, Chinatown, and the mayor's residence with its gardens. The 7-hour option includes all of that plus Nunobiki Falls and the Herb Gardens on the mountain, reached by rope-way gondola, with views of the Kobe skyline and seasonal flowers along the garden paths.
Do I have to walk the whole time?
The tour is a walking experience, but train or taxi is available at additional cost if you need a break or want to cover ground faster between stops. Your guide can arrange this when you plan the route together.
Can I customize the stops to match what I'm interested in?
Yes. After you book, the guide contacts you within 48 hours to plan your personalized experience. Tell them what you want to see (sake tasting, specific shrines, gardens, or anything else), and they'll build the route around your interests.
Is there a sake tasting option?
Yes. You can visit either a local brewery museum or a popular sake bar, whichever you prefer. Let your guide know when you plan the tour and they'll include it in your route.
