The experience
The tour starts in Kobe's Kitano Ijinkan district, where Western-style buildings line the slopes above the port. You begin at the Starbucks Coffee Kobe Kitano Ijinkan, a renovated historical structure that sets the tone for what follows: architecture that carries the city's foreign trade history in its brick and timber. From there, the guide moves you through Weathercock House, a classical German-style building with exhibits on daily life in Kobe's trading era, and then up the steep stairs of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine: built over 800 years ago and now a vantage point where you can frame the city center and port together in a single shot.
The route then descends into the Kobe Foreign Settlement, where massive, ornate buildings designed for wedding and fashion photography line the streets, and Otsunaka Street, an 800-meter stretch of renovated old-fashioned storefronts now housing cafes and apparel shops. These two areas offer different moods: one grand and formal, one lived-in and casual. You'll end the afternoon at Meriken Park and Kobe Harborland on the waterfront, where the BE KOBE monument, brick warehouses, and the vermilion Port Tower give you the harbor's full visual story. Lunch happens at a restaurant of your choice in Harborland. The guide does not include a meal, so you decide where and what to eat.
Wear comfortable shoes. You're walking the whole route. The tour finishes at a different spot from where it starts, so you're not retracing steps. If weather turns or a site closes temporarily, the guide will swap in an alternative without breaking the flow of the day.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (4 to 17 years): free; Infant (under 4): free.
What is Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and why is it worth the climb?
Kitano Tenmangu Shrine was built in 1180 and is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, revered as a god of learning. The steep stairs inside the shrine grounds lead to a viewing platform where you can see the city center and the Port of Kobe spread below you: a rare vantage point for photos that most visitors miss.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
You walk the entire route across eight stops over four and a half hours, moving between the Kitano district, the Foreign Settlement, Otsunaka Street, and the waterfront parks. The terrain includes steep shrine stairs and sloped streets, so comfortable shoes are essential.
Does the tour include lunch?
Lunch is not included, but you'll have time to eat at a restaurant in Kobe Harborland, where you can choose a meal with a view of the port. The guide will recommend spots, and you pay separately for food and drink.
What makes Meriken Park a good photo location?
Meriken Park sits on the waterfront and features the BE KOBE monument and other artistic objects placed throughout. The park also overlooks the brick warehouses and the Port Tower, so you can compose shots that show how the harbor has been rebuilt and reimagined.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the tour?
If weather is poor, the guide may change the route, the means of transportation, or the destinations to keep you safe and still capture the best shots possible. The guide will let you know of any changes when you meet.
