The experience
The tour starts at the harbor, where you stand facing Mt Rokko, Awaji island, the Pearl bridge and on clear days, Kansai airport across the water. If the season is right (December through March, weather permitting), you'll see the nori factory at work and can buy seaweed at outlet prices. From there, a tunnel leads into Shioya town itself: the real part, where people live and work.
Walking through the village, you stop at places that have shaped daily life here: a barber shop that has stood for over a hundred years, a tatami factory where mats are still made by hand, and a colonial-style house designed by Guggenheim. The guide opens doors to these places when they're operating, so you're not just looking from outside. Between stops, you eat and drink what locals eat (croquettes, sushi rolls, tofu, sweets), and talk with the people running the shops and stalls. The environment is built around conversation. Friendliness is the whole point.
Getting there takes 15 minutes by train from JR Kobe station or 40 minutes from Osaka. The walk itself is manageable for all fitness levels, and strollers are welcome if you're traveling with infants or small children. Service animals are allowed.
