The experience
Kobe sits on a hillside sloping down to the sea, and a private guide lets you move through it at your own pace instead of following a fixed itinerary. You choose which neighborhoods and attractions matter to you, whether that's the panoramic views from Mount Rokko and the Shin-Kobe Ropeway, the wooden mansions and cafes of Kitano-cho where foreign merchants settled in the 1800s, or the sake breweries and museums of the Nada district, Japan's top sake-producing region. The guide is a government-licensed interpreter with deep knowledge of Japanese culture and history, fluent in English, and able to answer questions about the city as you walk.
The four-hour option covers two to three sites. The six-hour option adds a fourth. You meet your guide on foot in a designated area of Kobe rather than at a hotel or station, and the entire tour stays within the city's walkable neighborhoods. This is a walking tour, so comfortable shoes matter. Entrance fees to museums and attractions are not included, nor is lunch, though many stops have cafes and restaurants nearby: Kobe Harborland, for instance, has waterfront eateries overlooking the harbor and illuminated port tower in the evening.
The tour is suitable for all fitness levels and wheelchair accessible throughout. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need a break. Service animals are welcome, and infants or small children can ride in a stroller. Because this is a private tour, you cannot combine multiple groups. It is just you and your guide.
What’s included
