Step-by-step itinerary
Explore nature and traditional crafts in Kobe
- Hike to Nunobiki Falls
- Visit Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum
- Stop at Ikuta Shrine
- Experience crafts at Kitano Meister Garden
- Tour Sourakuen Garden
The experience
How do you see both the nature and the craft traditions that define Kobe in a single afternoon? This private tour threads them together: you start at Nunobiki Falls, one of Japan's three most sacred waterfalls, where a short hike lets you feel the scale of the landscape sandwiched between sea and mountains. The walk itself is part of the experience. It is how you move through the city's geography, not just pass through it. If rain threatens, the guide will skip the falls for safety and adjust the route instead.
The Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum holds 35,000 items collected since 1984, the only museum in Japan dedicated to carpentry tools alone. You will see the implements and learn the techniques that shaped Japanese architecture and woodworking culture. After that, the tour moves through three gardens: Ikuta Shrine, where you can try water fortune-telling; Kitano Meister Garden, a former school building now housing over 20 craft studios where you can watch or try a craft yourself; and Sourakuen Garden, a 20,000-square-meter Japanese garden with a 300-year-old boathouse and buildings designated as important cultural assets. The tour ends at Sourakuen, not where it began, so plan your onward travel from there.
Entrance fees, local transport between stops, and any craft activities you choose to try are not included in the tour fee. Bring extra money (roughly ¥4,100 per person minimum). Your guide will be with you the whole time and will handle the route and timing. You cover the cost of entry and movement. The tour suits all fitness levels, though the hike to Nunobiki Falls is real terrain, not a stroll.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Chinese and Japanese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Infant (under 4): free.
What is Nunobiki Falls and why is it part of this tour?
Nunobiki Falls is one of Japan's three most sacred waterfalls and sits in Kobe itself, letting you experience the scale of nature within a city. The hike to reach it shows how Kobe sits between sea and mountains. It is a short walk that grounds the day in the landscape rather than just moving between museums.
What will I actually see at the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum?
The museum holds 35,000 carpentry tools collected since 1984, the only museum in Japan focused on this craft alone. You will see the implements, learn the techniques that built Japanese architecture, and understand the skills and wisdom embedded in the tools and the wood culture around them.
Can I try a craft at Kitano Meister Garden, or is it just watching?
Kitano Meister Garden has over 20 craft studios offering more than 60 kinds of craft experiences, so you can try one if you want to. Any activity you choose costs extra and is your own decision. Your guide will show you what is available.
What is included in the tour fee, and what do I need to pay separately?
The tour fee covers the private guide and their expenses. You pay separately for all entrance fees, local transport between stops, and any craft activities or food you choose. Bring at least roughly ¥4,100 per person in addition to the tour cost.
Does the tour start and end in the same place?
The tour ends at Sourakuen Garden, not where it began, so you will need to arrange your own transport back to your hotel or the next stop. Tell your guide if you need to end somewhere else and they can work with you on it.
What happens if it rains?
If rain falls on the day of your tour, Nunobiki Falls will be skipped for safety reasons. Your guide will adjust the route to focus on the museums and gardens instead, so you still see the craft traditions and the gardens.
