The experience
The rooftop where you start sits just three minutes' walk from Hakone-Yumoto station. Before stepping onto the trail, you'll do gentle exercises and meditation to calm your mind and wake up your senses. This is not a hike built for speed or distance. It's a meditative journey where the pace itself is the practice. You walk slowly, focusing on the contact of your feet with the earth, the shift of your weight, the rhythm of your breath. As mental chatter gradually quiets, your awareness of your body and surroundings deepens.
The Yusaka Trail is the path itself. Travelers and pilgrims have walked it for over 1,000 years, and Kumano Shrine sits along the way: the shrine known as the birthplace of Hakone's hot springs. You'll visit it as part of the walk, not as a separate stop. The trail winds through Hakone's forest, and the meditative practice is what transforms a mountain walk into something different: you're not collecting views or checking off landmarks, but training your attention on sensation and stillness.
The tour ends with a sharing circle where you and the other participants reflect on what you noticed during the walk. A guide leads the whole experience in English and holds the space for the practice. You'll receive a Hakone Calling Original Votive Tablet as a keepsake, and accident insurance covers you during the activity.
