The Experience

What makes this hike different from a casual mountain walk is that you're retracing a route that defined travel in Japan during the Edo period. The Hakone Hachiri was part of the Old Tokaido Highway, the main passage between Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto, and the landscape you move through (steep mountain grades, a formal checkpoint, cedar avenues planted centuries ago to shade travelers) still carries that history. Your certified guide provides the context that turns the scenery into a story: why the checkpoint mattered, how the cedar trees earned their place in a traditional Japanese song, what the ruins of Yamanaka Castle tell you about the region's past.

The day starts at Hakone Yumoto Station with a shared taxi to the trailhead. After about an hour of walking, you reach a wood crafting village where artisans work with local timber, then a bus takes you past the steepest section to an Amasake Tea House: a 400-year-old structure that once served travelers on this exact route. You drink tea and eat Japanese snacks there before resuming the hike, which takes around 40 minutes to Lake Ashi. Once you reach the lake, you walk the shoreline past the Heiwa no Torii gate with Mt Fuji visible in the background (weather permitting), then through the cedar avenue the guide will explain. After the Hakone Checkpoint (where you'll learn how it functioned as an immigration post during the Edo period), you stop for lunch at a local restaurant. A bus carries you to the Shizuoka side of the trail, where you visit Yamanaka Castle Ruins (Mt Fuji may be visible from here too), and the walk concludes at Mishima, where you visit Mishima Taisha shrine and walk along the Genbe River before the tour ends at Mishima Station.

Transportation between the major sites is handled by shared taxi and local bus. The walking sections are the core of the experience. Your guide carries a wilderness first aid certificate and will adjust the pace to the group's fitness level. The tour runs seven hours total, and you'll need moderate physical fitness for the hiking portions. Lunch, local transport and the cup of amasake are not included in the tour price.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, French, Chinese and Japanese.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.

What is the Hakone Hachiri and why does it matter historically?

The Hakone Hachiri is a Japan Heritage section of the Old Tokaido Highway, the main route between Edo and Kyoto during the 17th century and beyond. Walking it means you traverse the same mountain pass that samurai, merchants and officials crossed for centuries, and your guide explains the significance of each landmark (the checkpoint, the tea house, the cedar groves) as you encounter them.

Will I see Mt Fuji on this hike?

Mt Fuji is visible from several points along the route (from Lake Ashi, from the cedar avenue section, and potentially from Yamanaka Castle Ruins), but visibility depends on weather. The guide will point out the different angles and perspectives you get of the mountain as you walk.

How much walking is involved and what is the total time?

You hike around 8km over the course of seven hours, with the longest continuous walk being about 40 minutes to reach Lake Ashi. The day includes bus rides to skip the steepest sections and to move between major stops, so the walking is broken into manageable segments rather than one continuous climb.

What is included and what do I need to pay separately?

The tour includes the certified guide, the shared taxi to the trailhead and local buses between stops. Lunch at a local restaurant, the cup of amasake at the tea house, and any additional transportation (like the Shinkansen from Mishima back to Odawara) are separate costs.
