The experience

The day starts with a drive inland through the Jamaican countryside to the Rio Nuevo area, where you board a handcrafted 30-foot bamboo raft. Your guide poles you down the calm waters of the White River, pointing out the landscape and explaining the island's heritage as you drift past the site of the 1658 Rio Nuevo Battle. The raft moves slowly enough that you can absorb the surroundings without fighting current or noise. Many operators offer a limestone foot massage on the water for an extra cost if you want it.

Before the raft, you'll climb Dunn's River Falls (the terraced cascade that drops toward Ocho Rios), with a guide helping you up the natural stone steps. Immediately after, you stay at the same spot to zipline over the waterfall and through the coconut trees on multiple lines, one of which crosses directly over the river. The contrast between climbing and zipping the same terrain in one morning is the structure of the day: you move through each location twice, in different ways.

Between the water activities and the raft, you ride horseback through the countryside near Rio Bueno, Marcus Mosiah Garvey's birthplace, and your horse carries you into the Caribbean Sea for a swim. Lunch happens at Scotchies, a popular spot for authentic Jamaican jerk chicken, pork and sausage with sides and a cold drink. The whole sequence runs roughly five hours from pickup to drop-off, with time built in for shopping if you want it. Your guide speaks English throughout, and the group stays private: only your party participates.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years). Children under 13 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the White River like to raft on?

The White River near Rio Nuevo flows calm and clear, moving slowly enough that you can take in the landscape and listen to your guide's commentary about Jamaica's history without struggling against current. The 30-foot bamboo raft is poled by your guide rather than paddled, so you sit and drift rather than work.

How hard is it to climb Dunn's River Falls?

Dunn's River is a series of natural stone steps and pools that cascade toward the ocean. Your guide helps you ascend, and the climb is manageable for anyone with moderate fitness, though the rocks are slippery and water shoes (which you wear) are essential. The height and the number of steps mean it takes focus and balance, not extreme strength.

Do I need to be an experienced rider for the horseback part?

The horses are described as gentle, and the ride follows a scenic route through the countryside near Rio Bueno rather than challenging terrain. Your guide leads the experience, and the ride ends with the horses carrying you into the sea for a swim, so comfort with animals and water is more important than riding skill.

What happens at Dunn's River after I climb it?

After climbing, you stay at the same location to zipline. Multiple ziplines crisscross the area through coconut trees, and one line runs directly over the river itself, giving you a different view of the waterfall and the landscape you just climbed through on foot.
