The experience

I still remember the way the horse’s mane felt (wet and a little scratchy), while we splashed into the Caribbean Sea outside Ocho Rios. I’d never ridden a horse straight into the water before. Bamboo rafting down the White River was slower: a relief after all that noise. Our raft captain, Li, joked about “Jungle socks” (the limestone foot rub thing) and tried to teach us some patois phrases. I butchered every one but he laughed anyway. The river smelled green (if that makes sense), and there were flashes of blue kingfishers darting past. You just drift and listen to stories about Jamaica’s history or sometimes nothing at all.
