The Experience
I didn’t expect to start the day bouncing along red dirt roads above Montego Bay, but there we were — helmets on, dust in our teeth, laughing every time someone hit a bump too hard. Our guide, Andre, kept calling out “easy now!” like he’d seen way too many tourists get overconfident. The air smelled like wet earth and something sweet I couldn’t place. Maybe mango trees? Anyway, the ATV part was wild — not scary exactly, just enough to make you feel awake.
After that rush, it felt almost strange to slow down for the bamboo rafting. We drove up into Lethe — tiny place, kids waving from porches — and met Mr. Campbell at the riverbank. He showed us how to step onto the raft (I nearly slipped; he grinned but didn’t say anything). The water was greenish and cool against my hand. Floating down the Great River was quiet except for birds and the sound of his pole pushing off rocks. At some point he started telling stories about growing up here; I only caught half of it because I got distracted by sunlight flickering through leaves overhead.
The limestone foot massage was… honestly, I thought it would be gimmicky but it wasn’t. There’s this chalky paste they rub on your feet while you’re still on the raft — it feels cold at first and then kind of tingly. My friend tried to ask what was in it and Mr. Campbell just laughed and said “Jamaican secret.” I still think about that feeling sometimes when my shoes are too tight back home.
