The Experience

“You just let the river carry you — don’t fight it,” our raft captain, Delroy, grinned as he pushed us off from the bank at Lethe. I remember his hands — rough from work but steady as he guided our 30-foot bamboo raft into the slow green current. The Great River was quieter than I expected, except for birds somewhere in the trees and that soft hush of water against bamboo. There was this faint earthy smell from the mud that stuck with me for hours.

We drifted past a floating bar where some folks were laughing over Red Stripe bottles. I tried to order “jerk chicken” in my best Jamaican accent — pretty sure I failed because the cook just laughed and handed me a plate anyway. The food hit different after sitting on the raft for so long; spicy, smoky, kind of perfect with river air in your face. WiFi on board felt strange out here (I barely touched my phone), but I guess it’s handy if you want to share photos right away.
