The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Montego Bay hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, then a 30–45 minute drive into the hills of St. James to Lethe village, where the Great River meets the landscape. You board a 30-foot hand-crafted bamboo raft: the kind built locally and designed to sit low in the water so you feel the current and the coolness of it. Your certified raft captain poles you downriver while pointing out the vegetation and wildlife around the banks and explaining the history of the area and the village itself.

Halfway through the float, the captain prepares a natural foot massage using limestone paste made from river rocks, locally called "Jungle Socks." You sit back on the raft while he works the paste into your feet: a moment to stop moving and let the river do the work. The whole float takes roughly an hour and a half on the water, then the return drive brings you back to your hotel.

If you're marking a birthday, the operator can decorate the raft ahead of time. Specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with young children. Food and drinks aren't included but are available for purchase. The private transportation option means a dedicated vehicle for your group. The other options pair you with other travelers heading to Lethe on the same day.
