Step-by-step itinerary

Rafting and Hip Strip visit

  • Travel to Lethe village
  • Board bamboo raft and float downstream
  • Enjoy foot massage with natural limestone
  • Visit Hip Strip for shopping and drinks

The experience

Your driver picks you up at your hotel and takes you into the hills of St. James to Lethe, a small village where the Great River runs cool and clear. You board a hand-crafted bamboo raft (each one carries two people), and float downstream with your guide pointing out the landscape as you drift. The raft itself is the whole point: you're not watching someone else work. You're on the water, moving through the hills at the pace the current sets. Somewhere along the way, your guide uses natural limestone to massage your feet while you're still on the raft.

After the river, your driver takes you to the Hip Strip on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, Montego Bay's main stretch for shopping, drinks and ocean views. Margarittaville is temporarily closed for renovations, but your guide can steer you to another restaurant or bar in the same area, or you can browse the gift shops and souvenirs instead. The whole outing runs three to four hours from pickup to drop-off.

What is the Great River at Lethe like when you get there?

The Great River at Lethe flows cool and clear through a small village in the hills of St. James, with picturesque views from the surrounding landscape down to the water itself. It's the setting where you board the bamboo raft and float downstream.

Do I operate the raft or does the guide do it?

The raft floats downstream on the current, so you're on the water the whole time without paddling or steering. Your guide is with you, pointing out the views along the way and performing the foot massage during the ride.

Can I choose to do just the rafting, or just the Hip Strip?

You can book the bamboo rafting only, the Hip Strip and shopping only, or both together. Pick whichever option suits your day.

What happens if Margarittaville is still closed?

Your guide will take you to another restaurant or bar on the Hip Strip where you can have drinks and enjoy ocean views, or you can spend the time shopping for souvenirs and gifts instead.

Is this tour shared with other travelers or private?

This is a private tour, so your driver and guide work with your group only. Each bamboo raft holds two people, so if you're traveling as a couple or two individuals, you'll share the raft with each other.
