Step-by-step itinerary
Appleton Rum and Black River Safari
- Visit Appleton Rum Estate
- Tour rum-making process
- Explore sugar cane fields
- Board Black River Safari boat
- Observe wildlife and mangroves
The experience
The tour runs three to four hours total and moves between two distinct landscapes. You start at the Appleton Estate, set among sugar cane fields in the Nassau Valley, where guides walk you through each stage of rum production, from cane harvesting to distillation and aging. The estate's traditions stretch back over 265 years, and the tour is built around how that long history shapes what ends up in the bottle. After Appleton, you head to the Black River, where a sturdy pontoon boat becomes your transport through the river's meandering channels. Mangrove trees line both banks, and the water stays calm enough that wildlife (crocodiles, herons, egrets and other bird species) move through their routines without the noise of a speedboat.
Private transportation collects you from your Negril hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and handles all the driving between stops. The guide speaks English and stays with you through both the estate and the river, so you're not switching hands or losing context between the two. Children from age 13 are welcome on the tour. Younger children can attend if they sit on an adult's lap during transport.
What’s included
