The Experience

The morning air was still a bit cool when our driver pulled up outside the hotel—he greeted us with a big grin and a quick joke about “beating the heat.” We set off through winding roads, reggae humming low on the radio, passing sugar cane fields that seemed to stretch forever. By the time we reached YS Falls, the sun was already warming up. A tractor ride took us past grazing cows and sleepy dogs to the falls themselves. I could hear the water before I saw it—loud, steady, almost like applause. There’s a natural pool at the top where you can just float and look up at the trees. Lifeguards were around, chatting with visitors and keeping an eye out, which made me feel pretty relaxed about jumping in.

After drying off (and grabbing a quick patty from a little stand near the entrance), we headed to Black River for the safari boat ride. The guide here really knew his stuff—he pointed out crocodiles sunning themselves on muddy banks and explained how mangroves help protect this part of Jamaica from storms. The boat glided quietly; sometimes you’d hear nothing but birds calling or a splash as something slipped into the water. Lunch was waiting for us when we docked—simple but tasty: jerk chicken, rice and peas, cold Ting soda.

Last stop: Pelican Bar. It’s honestly wild—just this wooden shack perched on stilts way out in shallow blue water. We hopped onto another boat for about ten minutes; salt spray hit my face and I could taste it on my lips. At the bar itself, reggae played softly while folks lounged with Red Stripes or fresh coconut water. Staff were easygoing but always checking everyone was safe getting on and off the boats. You can see pelicans swooping by if you’re lucky—or just kick back and watch fishermen haul in their catch as the afternoon light turns everything gold.
