The experience

The day starts on the White River, where you board a 30-foot bamboo raft with one other adult and a trained captain who guides you downstream. Two people share each raft, so the pace stays relaxed and the captain can point out the lush greenery and wildlife along the banks. This is not a whitewater run. It's a slow drift through forest, designed to let you take in the landscape without fighting the current.

From there, the day branches. Blue Hole sits in a forest clearing where a series of natural pools and small waterfalls let you swim, dive and swing from ropes into the water. Guides walk the trail with you through the cascades, marking the safe route with steps and ropes. One passage involves a small cave climb under a waterfall: safe but tight if you're claustrophobic. Jelly shoes and life jackets are sold at the entrance for swimmers who want extra grip or flotation. Dunn's River Falls, Jamaica's most photographed waterfall, flows directly onto a beach where you can climb the natural rock steps or wade in the shallows. The operator arranges your transport between sites and back to your hotel. You pick which attractions suit your day and where to eat lunch.
