The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Montego Bay, Negril or Falmouth. A driver takes you in a private air-conditioned vehicle to YS Falls, where a tractor-pulled jitney carries you to the main site. Seven waterfalls cascade into natural pools. You can swim in them or use the 4-foot wading pool on the patio. Lifeguards are on duty. If you want more than swimming, the site offers a canopy zip-line tour and tubing on the river, though these cost extra. The estate has a restaurant for lunch and changing rooms.

After YS Falls, the driver takes you to Appleton Estate, Jamaica's oldest rum producer. A guide walks you through the distillery's 200-year-old pot stills, shows you how they extract juice from sugarcane using both historic and modern methods, and takes you into the barrel houses where rum ages. You taste molasses and freshly squeezed sugarcane juice along the way. The tour ends with a tasting of up to 13 different rums: the part most visitors remember best. The whole estate visit typically takes a couple of hours.

Your driver returns you to your starting hotel by late afternoon. The full day runs from around 9:30 am to 3:30 pm or later depending on how much time you spend at each stop. Because the vehicle is private, you set the pace: linger longer at the waterfalls or the rum tasting, or move through faster if you prefer. Entry fees to YS Falls and Appleton Estate are paid on-site and are not included in the tour price.
